Marzamemi e Pantalica
The
name Marzamemi comes from an arab word “Marsŕ al Hamen”
that means Bay of pigeons, because of the great number of this
kind of birds in spring. It is a small village washed by Ionian
sea (Mar Ionio) and it is located under the sea level. In the
Ionian Sea there are the 2 Marzamemi’s isles. Its inhabitants are
devoted to fishing that was very famous in the past thanks to
the tunny-fishing net. The Marzamemi tunny-fishing net was the
second in Sicily after the Favignana one (in Trapani) and today
it is ocasionally used every 5 years. It was put in Sicily by the
Arabs during their Kingdom. Around the central square there are
the fishers’ houses that gives to the landscape a fantastic
uniformity. All these houses were built in 1600 ,the same period
of the tunny-fishing net.In 1752 was built the Palace of the
Villadorata Prince (Palazzo del Principe di Villadorata) in
sandstone and in honour of it all the fishers’houses were
restored. |
