Noto Infiorata

Since 1980, each year, on the third week of may , Noto, “the rocky garden” becomes the garden of flowers, in fact it becomes the stage of INFIORATA, set exactly in “Via Nicolaci”, (Nicolaci street) the heart of the historical centre. It’s a festival known and appreciated for its spectacularity. It consists of making paintings covered exclusively with petals and other plants. Year by year all the artists propose different subjects: religious, mithological and of popular culture. The INFIORATA is exposed in via Nicolaci, whose inclination gives a particular atmosphere to the festival: the street is 122 metres long and 7 metres wide. The carpet of flowers covers 700 square metres and it’s composed by 16 models. To create the INFIORATA models,the artists need about 400.000 flowers:carnations, gerberas, daisies, roses, wild flowers and vegetal inflorescences.
All the nuances used for the paintings are made with : myrtle’s leaves, fennel, green lentiscus, carnations’ leaves and stems, bran, grinded carobs, black seed of carobs and black coffee.

During the process of “Infiorata” we can distinguish 3 different steps: on Friday night the artists start painting the outlines on the ground in Via Nicolaci; on Saturday night florists and their collaborators fill in with flowers the outlines, already traced along the street. The filling in process of these frames continues all nightlong and the day after, on Sunday the carpet of flowers is ready to surprise thousands of Italians and foreigner visitors.
During the week there are different antertainment and musical activities into the churches and along Noto streets.
